Guidance on manual handling training (for inanimate loads) is not too prescriptive. Training typically has to be “suitable and sufficient”. Some of the elements which could guide your decision are:

  • Accident record
  • Observation in the workplace. One of the appendices in the City & Guilds Manual Handling Train the Trainer course manual, is a practical record which can be used by supervisors to evaluate to what extent handlers are able to apply good practice. The identification of problems should trigger refresher training
  • After a period of time has elapsed since the last training – with every 1 or 2 years being typical
